In October 2022, Confidence Amatobi, a father residing in Imo State, faced charges for fracturing the arm of his two- month-old child due to the infant disrupting his sleep. This distressing Incident, occurring in Imo State, incited widespread outrage and condemnation as the infant’s arm was so severely injured that it required amputation.
Following the gruesome attack, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Imo State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) swiftly called upon the State Government and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to swiftly apprehend and punish the perpetrator. Together, NHRC, NAWOJ, and the distraught mother, Miracle, convened a joint news conference in Owerri, demanding justice for the innocent victim.
Dr. Dorothy Nnaji, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in Imo State, expressed disbelief at the appalling incident, condemning it as a horrific act of violence against a defenseless child simply because he was crying and disturbing his father’s sleep. She disclosed that the child’s right hand was fractured after being repeatedly struck with a plastic object by his father, Confidence Amatobi.
Mrs. Nnaji labeled the assault a severe case of child abuse and implored the authorities to ensure that the voiceless. child receives the justice he deserves. Similarly, Mrs. Ukachi Ukah, the NHRC’ s Imo State Coordinator, denounced the violence and stressed the importance of justice being served.
Narrating the traumatic experience, Mrs. Favour Chikwe, the mother of the baby, revealed that she had left her son with his father on October 7, 2022, while she went to the bathroom. Upon her return, she was horrified to find her son’s right hand fractured and swollen from his father’s beatings.
Allegedly, Amatobi resorted to physical abuse as the baby’s cries disturbed his sleep at night. When he realized the extent of the baby’s injuries, he attempted to conceal his actions by using rubber bands and sticks to mend the broken bones. Mrs. Chikwe further
