In a recent development, the Southern and Middle Belt Forum (SMBLF) has expressed vehement opposition to the prolonged incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by the Nigerian Government on charges of treason.
The forum, during its convened meeting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, highlighted grave concerns regarding the ramifications of Kanu’s detention on the peace and security of the Southeast region.
Under the stewardship of Chief Edwin Clark, the SMBLF convened to address various pressing issues, one of which was the condemnation of the formation of an ethnic militia by Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The forum adamantly cautioned against any complacency from President Bola Tinubu’s administration towards such developments, emphasizing the potential escalation of ethnic tensions and the proliferation of militias should such actions be tolerated.
In a sternly worded communique issued post-meeting, the SMBLF underscored the imperative for upholding the rule of law, urging President Tinubu to ensure compliance with all court rulings regarding Kanu’s case. The release of Kanu, according to the forum, is not only a matter of justice but also a strategic step towards fostering peace in the region, as attested by the commitment of Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership to collaborate with him in restoring stability.
Furthermore, the forum decried the pervasive state of insecurity plaguing various parts of the nation, citing recent. incidents in Plateau, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Benue states, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as glaring examples. Expressing incredulity at the audacity of criminal elements freely operating within communities while security agencies struggle to contain their activities, the SMBLF reiterated the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s security architecture.
In particular, the forum emphasized the necessity for greater federal government support towards the implementation of state and community policing initiatives across the nation.
This sentiment was echoed by prominent regional leaders in attendance, including Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide; Chief Ayo Adebanjo of Afenifere; Dr. Pogu Bitrus, National President of Middle Belt Forum (MBF); and Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, National Chairman of Pan- Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).
The meeting, which boasted the presence of several elder statesmen, former governors, members of the National Assembly, former ministers, and other esteemed leaders from various zones, served as a platform for robust deliberations on crucial matters affecting the nation.

determination to safeguard the interests and well-being of all Nigerians amidst prevailing challenges.
