The story of a minibus driver, Richard Makuza, has brought attention to the prevalence of domestic violence. Richard appeared before the local court to defend himself against allegations of violence made by his wife, Patricia Mulenga.
The case, detailed by the Zambian Observer, revealed shocking details about the couple’s marriage, which had been riddled with conflict and abuse. Richard, 48, and Patricia, 40, had been married for over two decades and were parents of five children, however, their marriage was marred by troubling incidents of violence and neglect.
Patricia testified that Richard had been physically abusive and failed to provide for the family, she recounted how he had threatened to burn her clothes, leading her to seek refuge with her parents. She also bravely disclosed how Richard had subjected her to public beatings, once causing her to faint.
Richard was also accused of neglecting the family’s financial needs, despite working for a milling company and later returning home. In contrast, Richard denied the allegations of violence but did admit to having a girlfriend, leading to strained relations with Patricia, in a surprising turn of events, Richard claimed that Patricia had been preventing him from being intimate with her.
A revelation made during the court proceedings, the couple’s relationship had become a matter of public record. As the case progressed, the court magistrate, Lewis Mumba, along with magistrates Abbyshine Michelo and Esther Mulomba, acknowledged the presence of sustained violence in the marriage, despite Richard’s denials, the court granted Patricia’s request for divorce.
The ruling included an order for Richard to compensate Patricia with K6, 000, with an initial payment of K1, 000 followed by monthly installments of K300. Richard was also mandated to pay child maintenance fees of K400 and share the jointly acquired property equally with Patricia.
The decision by the court in this case serves as a reminder of the prevalence of domestic violence and the importance of speaking out against it.
