The incident was sparked off when a woman who had boarded the tricycle heading towards the ever-bubbling Urua Itam, became a victim of robbery. Unbeknownst to her, two of her fellow passengers were thieves in disguise, who forcefully seized her handbag containing cash and other personal items.
Affiong Bassey, an eyewitness selling petty wares along the Calabar- Itu portion of the market, provided a harrowing narration of the incident. According to her, the alarm raised by the woman drew rapid response from the irate traders. Swiftly, they cordoned off the tricycle and apprehended one of the suspects. His accomplice, however, managed to escape, the he woman’s shouts revealed that she had been robbed at gunpoint. Her alarm drew an Immediate response from the traders, who trapped one of them, while the second suspect escaped.
