Dangote Refinery, in pursuit of a diversified feedstock strategy, has reportedly entered into an agreement with Trafigura Group, an American oil trader, to purchase two million barrels of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) Midland. This marks a significant departure as it is the first instance of the refinery opting for non- Nigerian crude, signaling a broader trend of increased competitiveness of American crude in the global market.
Scheduled for delivery by the end of February, this move underscores the refinery’ s commitment to maintaining production levels. The facility, with a daily processing capacity of 650, 000 barrels, recently commenced operations, focusing initially on achieving a processing rate of 350, 000 barrels per day and gradually scaling up to its full capacity.
The surge in U. S. oil supply over the past decade has reshaped the global oil market dynamics, extending its influence even to regions like Asia. For Nigeria, whose economy is heavily reliant on petroleum exports, these transatlantic deliveries have significant implications.
Despite its primary reliance on domestic crude through an agreement with the trading arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Dangote Refinery has received one million barrels each from Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCO) and the NNPCL. This diversification strategy allows the refinery to process various African crudes, in addition to supplies from distant sources such as the United States and Saudi Arabia.
