In an unexpected development, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) grapples with the potential exit of three key member countries– Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The military juntas from these nations announced their withdrawal from the regional bloc, raising concerns about the stability and unity of the ECOWAS community.
This decision follows a tense situation where ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, had issued a stern warning of military action if the junta in Niger did not cede power following the overthrow of the democratically elected government. Despite the pressure, the regime stood firm, receiving support from Mali and Burkina Faso, both expressing solidarity and a willingness to defend Niger.
On Sunday, the leaders of these Sahel nations jointly declared their sovereign decision to pull out of ECOWAS. However, the ECOWAS Commission, headquartered in Abuja, responded with a communique stating that it had not yet received any formal notification from the three Member- States regarding their intention to withdraw from the community.
The ECOWAS Commission emphasized its ongoing efforts to collaborate with Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to restore constitutional order. It affirmed that these countries remained integral members of the ECOWAS community, and the Authority of Heads of State and Government remained committed to finding a negotiated solution to the political impasse.
