Muhammadu Sanusi, the dethroned emir of Kano and former Central Bank of Nigeria’ s Governor, has come forward to defend the relocation of certain departments of the apex bank from Abuja to Lagos by the current government of Bola Tinubu. Sanusi, in a statement, argued that the move is an ” eminently sensible” decision that aims to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) had previously expressed concerns over the relocation, interpreting it as a deliberate plot against the Northern region. However, Sanusi countered this viewpoint, suggesting that the relocation of specific functions to the larger Lagos office is a strategic move that aligns with effective management practices.
In his statement quoted by The Nation, Sanusi proposed a strategic division of functions between Abuja and Lagos. He suggested relocating the Financial System Stability (FSS) and most operational functions to Lagos, allowing the Deputy Governors to operate from there. Meanwhile, economic policy, corporate services, and departments reporting directly to the Governor would remain in Abuja.
