In a recent interview on Channels Television, renowned political economist Professor Pat Utomi unveiled a significant development in Nigerian politics. He revealed that the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria People’ s Party (NNPP) have reached an agreement to form a mega party. Their goal is to unite forces and challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections, with a focus on prioritising the well- being and development of the Nigerian people.
Professor Utomi pointed out that Nigeria has been lacking a true political party since 1999, emphasising that existing platforms have primarily served as vehicles for machine politics and state capture rather than driving meaningful change. He urged Nigerians to consider the state of their quality of life since the turn of the millennium, highlighting the alarming deterioration of living standards, rampant poverty, and widespread violence plaguing the nation.
Reflecting on the political landscape in 1999, Professor Utomi acknowledged that the political class successfully formed a coalition to keep the military out of power. However, he lamented the failure to establish a genuine alignment with the Nigerian people and effectively improve their lives. This, he argued, has resulted in Nigeria becoming the poverty capital of the world and a hotbed of violence.
