In a recent call to action, social media influencer Reno Omokri has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to implement a ban on sports betting apps within the country, emphasizing the potential positive impact on the value of the Nigerian Naira.
Citing data from the National Lottery Trust Fund, Omokri expressed concern over the staggering $1 billion daily expenditure on gambling in Nigeria.
Taking to his X profile on Wednesday, Omokri conveyed his perspective through a series of tweets, proposing that President Tinubu could enhance the economic conditions for most Nigerians by issuing an Executive Order empowering the Nigerian Communications Commission to prohibit sports betting apps from GSM Internet Service Providers’ App Stores in Nigeria.
Additionally, he suggested revoking licenses of physical sports betting operators in the country, deeming it a more sensible approach than what he referred to as Buhari’ s draconian #TwitterBan.

Drawing attention to the financial implications, Omokri highlighted that an average Nigerian spends $15 daily on sports betting and various forms of gambling. Alarming to him was the realization that the majority of this substantial amount was flowing out of the country, surpassing the nation’ s externally generated revenue.

Expressing his concern, Omokri questioned the sustainability of the Naira’ s strength under such circumstances. He lamented, ” How much is our GDP that we are pissing it away like that? More money is leaving Nigeria through gambling than is coming in. ”
Echoing Omokri’ s concerns, the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Zephaniah Jisalo, assured that the Federal Government would seek a lasting solution to the challenges arising from revenue generation in the gaming sector.
Speaking at the 2023 International Gaming Conference held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos State, on October 31, 2023, Jisalo pledged the government’ s commitment to ensuring the gaming industry’ s sustainable growth and development within the boundaries of its statutory powers.
Further insights into the matter were provided by the National Lottery Trust Fund’ s Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Bello Maigari. During an appearance before the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on November 20, 2023, Maigari disclosed that the Fund had generated N2. 5 billion in 2023.
