The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan- Kukah, has vehemently expressed that the ongoing spate of killings in some villages in Plateau State is not a mere herder- farmer clashes. In a statement released on Saturday, the influential cleric asserted that the perpetrators behind the attacks are driven by a distinct vision for Nigeria grounded in their ideological beliefs.
The bishop’ s condemnation comes in the wake of simultaneous attacks on communities in Bokkos and Barkin- Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State on Christmas eve, which he described as a sinister attempt to extinguish the joy of Christmas for thousands of people on the Plateau.
Kukah did not mince words, labeling the attackers as ” sons of Satan” and urging the government to resist their agenda while ensuring the protection of Nigerian citizens. In his statement, Bishop Kukah raised pertinent questions about the identity, origin, sponsorship, grievances, and motives of the assailants.
His concerns extend beyond the immediate conflict, delving into the broader context of Nigeria’ s security challenges. The bishop lamented the north’ s reputation as the ” incubator of all that is destructive, ” citing the presence of Boko Haram, banditry, and various forms of terrorism in the region.
