In a detailed account provided by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Friday, it was disclosed that the attacks on several villages in Plateau State on Christmas Eve that resulted in the death of over 195 civilians unfolded before troops could reach the affected locations.
Speaking on why the Military was not able to repel the attacks on time, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, shed light on the intervention efforts made by the troops in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas (LGAs), emphasizing how their arrival compelled some militants to withdraw after inflicting significant harm on the defenseless villagers.
The tragic events that transpired on Christmas Eve, orchestrated by unidentified gunmen in Bokkos and Barkin- Ladi LGAs, resulted in the heartbreaking loss of over 110 lives. Director Buba, during a press conference held in Abuja, expressed the sorrowful turn of events and provided crucial insights into the timeline of the attacks.
Buba highlighted the challenges faced by the troops in swiftly responding to the incidents, underscoring the vast expanse of Bokkos and Barkin Ladi LGAs, which together cover an extensive 2, 315 square kilometers and comprise over 350 dispersed villages.
The geographical layout of the region, characterized by rugged terrain that is largely inaccessible to vehicles, significantly impacted the reaction time of the troops to the distressing events unfolding on that fateful day.
