Following the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming the detention and trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), leaders both within and outside the South- East are increasingly leaning towards a political solution to address the legal impasse.
The Supreme Court’ s decision nullified the Court of Appeal’ s judgment that had ordered the release of Kanu, sparking a shift in the approach to resolving the situation. Prior to this ruling, prominent figures such as governors Chukwuma Soludo and Peter Mba, Professor Pat Utomi, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, and Texas House Representative Jarvis Johnson had advocated for Kanu’ s release. They argued that his continued detention exacerbated security issues in the South- East and the nation.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, initially arrested in 2015, has been in detention since June 29, 2021, facing charges of treason and terrorism, among others. Despite a previous Court of Appeal dismissal of charges and an order for his unconditional release, the Directorate of State Service (DSS) appealed to the Supreme Court, leading to the recent ruling.
In response to escalating tension and security concerns, political leaders, lawyers, human rights activists, and socio- cultural groups are urging President Bola Tinubu to consider a political solution. They highlight past instances where political solutions were employed to resolve similar issues, citing the Amnesty Programme for Asari Dokubo and the release of Boko Haram kingpins.
