Two young women in Zimbabwe, Nyasha Chabika and Flora Tofa, have made serious accusations against the police. The women, both 24 years old, claim that their phones were confiscated and used by the authorities after a video of their intimate encounter was circulated widely online. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) apprehended Chabika and Tofa in early December 2023 and charged them with violating the Censorship and Entertainment Control Act.
Following their arrest, Masvingo Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzie granted bail to the young women, setting the amount at ZWL$100, 000 for each of them. However, Chabika and Tofa have since spoken out against the treatment they allegedly experienced at the hands of the police. They assert that their privacy was violated when officers accessed their cell phones for purposes unrelated to the case. The young women claim that the police officers delved into their social media accounts, scrolling through their timelines and personal profiles. Additionally, they allege that the officers even went so far as to send messages to their friends, requesting money on their behalf.
The trial is still ongoing, and both Chabika and Tofa hope that their claims will be thoroughly investigated. They maintain that the police misconduct they have described should not be tolerated. Privacy invasion and misuse of personal information by law enforcement officers are serious offenses that undermine the trust between the public and the police. The young women’ s allegations raise concerns about the ethical conduct of the ZRP and the extent to which their actions may have infringed upon the personal rights of the accused.
