A 17- year- old girl who went out a clergyman in Ndola for help with her relationship problems was found guilty of indecently abusing her. A pastor from Kopaland named Gillion Matebele, who was 26 years old at the time of the crime, received an 18- year prison term with hard labour. Events that took place in a church building over the course of three days led to the decision handed down by Judge Greenwell Malumani of the Ndola High Court.
The victim allegedly felt lightheaded after being offered a drink by the pastor after a night out with her boyfriend. She awoke the following day to discover that she was nude. According to Judge Malumani, ” The offence in question was correctly established beyond any reasonable doubt. ” This means that Matebele’ s conviction will stand.
In an attempt to have Matebele’ s sentence reduced, his lawyer from the Legal Aid Board of Zambia invoked his roles as a priest and a father to a young child. However, Judge Malumani emphasised that the pastor’ s actions undermine public faith in religious leaders
This case highlights the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals who seek guidance from religious figures. The sentence makes it very clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated by saying that offenders will face the full force of the law.
