President Tinubu Commits to Supporting National Population Census and Data Collection
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the National Population Commission (NPC) in conducting a comprehensive national census in Nigeria. He made this assurance during the launch of the National Geospatial Data Repository, Digital CRVS System, and the inauguration of the National Coordination Committee for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of data in driving national growth and development. He called for close collaboration among various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the government to ensure the success of data-related initiatives.
The President stressed the need for modern technology and advanced data collection methods to obtain accurate and up-to-date information on Nigeria’s population. He highlighted that the nation must keep pace with the global advancements in efficient data sourcing.
Acknowledging that Nigeria is relatively spared from natural disasters, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for this fact, underscoring the importance of having comprehensive data for a nation of its size and complexity.
It’s worth noting that the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had allocated a significant budget, including a sum of N200 billion, to the Population Commission for the purpose of conducting a national census. While a substantial portion of the funds was utilized for preliminary census activities, the exercise had to be postponed due to other pressing national priorities. The commitment from President Tinubu indicates the government’s continued focus on addressing Nigeria’s population data needs.
