President Tinubu to Launch Comprehensive Birth, Death, and Marriage Registration Portal
In an effort to enhance civil registration in Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to launch an extensive birth, death, and marriage registration portal. This initiative, known as the electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) system, aims to streamline and modernize various aspects of civil registration. The announcement was made by Nasir Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), during a pre-launch briefing.
The e-CRVS system covers a wide range of civil registration processes, including birth registration, stillbirth registration, birth attestation, adoption, marriage notification, divorce notification, migration, and death registration. This comprehensive approach ensures that essential life events are documented and recorded efficiently.
Chairman Nasir Kwarra emphasized that the launch of the e-CRVS system by President Tinubu signifies the government’s dedication to enhancing civil registration data management. The system’s primary goals are to improve data collection, collation, processing, dissemination, and provide timely access to vital statistics in the country.
The e-CRVS system is part of a strategic initiative to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics in Nigeria over the next decade, from 2023 to 2030. This aligns with the country’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the National Population Commission developed the e-CRVS Operational Readiness Assessment Report. This report underscores the potential of digital technologies in transforming civil registration and vital statistics systems. The digital approach enables the secure storage of data at scale, all while maintaining cost-effectiveness in Nigeria.
The e-CRVS system offers several key features, including the issuance of digital certificates in all cases. It provides a verification platform accessible to registered organizations, ensuring data accuracy. Additionally, the system incorporates a central management system (dashboard) that compiles and analyzes civil registrations into vital statistics. These statistics are invaluable for informed decision-making.
The launch of the e-CRVS system is a significant step toward modernizing civil registration and vital statistics in Nigeria. It reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing data collection and access to vital events, ultimately contributing to the country’s development and achievement of the SDGs.
