Tragedy: Eyewitnesses recorded my father, driver bleeding to death – Akunyili’s son
Obum Akunyili, one of the children of the late Prof. Dora Akunyili, former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), lamented the tragic death of his father, Chike Akunyili, who was shot in an attack. During a special session at the second public hearing of the Anambra State Truth, Justice, and Peace Commission, Obum Akunyili expressed his frustration that his father and the driver bled to death at the scene of the attack while people recorded videos instead of seeking medical help.
Chike Akunyili was reportedly murdered by unidentified gunmen on September 29, 2021, while returning from an event in Onitsha, Anambra State, where his late wife received a posthumous award. Obum Akunyili emphasized that timely medical intervention could have increased his father’s chances of survival but that no efforts were made by those at the scene.
He called on Nigerians to prioritize helping individuals in distress rather than filming them. The Truth, Justice, and Peace Commission, which was established by Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, is tasked with investigating violent agitations and unrest in the state.
The commission’s Chairman, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, highlighted the importance of fostering hope and emphasized the role of the commission in seeking truth, justice, and peace for Anambra State.
