In Ogun State, a 36-year-old Unit Commandant of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Owonikoko John, has been apprehended for his alleged participation in arms supply and armed robberies. The arrest was carried out as part of an operation led by Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Omosanyi Adeniyi, the Area Commander, Ijebu-Ode, along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Benin highway.
John, who was taken into custody, was reportedly the mastermind behind several criminal activities in areas such as Obalende in Ogun State. Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of a firearm. In his confession, John allegedly revealed that Inspector of Police Ola had supplied him with the firearm in his possession.
Inspector Ola, who was also identified as a spy police, admitted that he had sold his pump-action rifle to the suspected armed robber but explained that he did so with caution and pleaded for mercy.
Ola said, “If I had known, I would not have done it that way.” He went on to clarify that officials of the VGN had purchased a gun from him, but they had been referred to him by a well-known individual in his area named Omooba.
The arrest of Owonikoko John and the involvement of a police inspector in supplying arms raise significant concerns about the extent of arms proliferation and the challenge of curbing armed criminal activities in the region.
