Labour Unions Threaten Nationwide Strike
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have issued a stern warning of a nationwide strike in response to the assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero. This announcement came during a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday, November 3.
The labour unions are demanding a 6-point action plan from the Federal Government. First, they insist on the investigation and redeployment of the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, who they hold accountable for the attack on Ajaero. Furthermore, they call for the removal and disciplinary action against the Area Commander and other officers who supervised the assault on Ajaero and fellow workers in Owerri.
In addition, they demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of Mr. Nwaneri Chinasa, who supervised the attack on workers and the brutality inflicted on Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NLC President. They also emphasize the need for a thorough examination of Ajaero’s physical and psychological injuries, and the restoration of all properties lost during the incident.
Should the government fail to meet these demands, the NLC, TUC, and their affiliates have threatened nationwide protests. The nationwide strike is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
