Nigerian University Staff Suspended for Six Months Over Certificate Forgery
A staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) in Anambra State, Nigeria, named Mr. Nwafor Ogbonnaya Nwesuzor, has been suspended for a period of six months for allegedly forging his degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates. The suspension was officially announced in a statement released by Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Special Adviser to the university’s vice-chancellor on public relations and special duties, and made available to journalists in Awka, Anambra State’s capital.
The case unfolded when Nwesuzor requested to change his degree result, which raised suspicions. It was discovered that he had abandoned his undergraduate program and forged a university statement of result and a letter of exclusion from the NYSC to secure employment at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. He later continued and completed his degree program.
Upon further investigation, the discrepancy between the original documents and the new documents he was attempting to submit became evident. The class of degree in both results varied significantly, with the forged statement of result bearing a second class lower division while the original result under the name Nwafor Ogbonnaya Nwesuzor bore a third class.
In accordance with the university’s rules and regulations, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone, approved the immediate suspension of Mr. Nwafor Osborne Ogbonnaya for a duration of six months. The case will undergo further processes within the university before a final decision is made. The university has taken this action following due process to address the case of certificate forgery.
