JUST IN: Details of how NSCDC parades armour cable thief in Kogi
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kogi State recently apprehended and presented a 30-year-old man named Yomi Sunday, who is accused of specializing in vandalizing armored cables in the Mopa Muro Local Government Area of the state.
Yomi Sunday, along with eight bundled cables for transportation, was paraded at the NSCDC’s command headquarters in Lokoja. The Commandant, Ahmad Ahmad Gandi, disclosed that a local vigilante group had captured the suspect and subsequently handed him over to the NSCDC in Mopa Muro Local Government Area.
Gandi expressed concern over the vandalism, which has had a detrimental impact on seven communities in Kogi West, including Aiyeteju-Mopa, Amuro, Agbajogun-Lodo, and others that depend on the national power grid.
The arrested suspect admitted to using a cutter to sever and strip electric cables and revealed that he used petroleum products to clean his hands after the operation. Yomi Sunday claimed that he was enticed into this illegal activity by an unnamed businessman who promised him generous compensation for the stolen materials, which were purportedly used for making jewelry and ornaments. Yomi expressed remorse for his actions and pledged not to engage in such criminal activities in the future.
Commandant Gandi issued a stern warning to criminals, emphasizing the NSCDC’s readiness to combat crime in the state. He highlighted that he had prosecuted 24 cases with over a 90% conviction rate since his appointment in the state and urged citizens to provide timely and reliable information to assist in their fight against criminality, emphasizing the need for a collective effort in the battle against criminal elements.
