Governor Fubara Counters Impeachment Efforts and Sparks Political Showdown
The embattled Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has boldly asserted his resistance to impeachment, escalating a dramatic political showdown in the state. Fubara’s unwavering position is a response to ongoing efforts to unseat him, which he has craftily countered through strategic maneuvers.
One of the most significant of these moves was the removal of the Rivers State House Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, and the swift appointment of Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison as the new Speaker. Not stopping there, the newly elected Speaker made a controversial decision by suspending the State Chief Judge, intensifying the political turmoil in Rivers State.
Furthermore, the governor was directed to appoint an Acting Chief Judge for the state, adding complexity to the unfolding political drama. The roots of this high-stakes political feud can be traced back to the once-amicable relationship between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Significantly, Fubara had previously served as the Director of Finance & Account at the Government House during Wike’s tenure. In 2020, Wike appointed Fubara as Permanent Secretary and later elevated him to the prestigious role of Accountant General of the state, solidifying their political alliance. However, recent events have strained this once-strong association.

According to reports from the Tinubu camp, if Wike fails to impeach Sim Fubara and regain control of Rivers State, he may lose his position as FCT Minister. It is suggested that Siminalayi Fubara might consider returning to the PDP camp, and this could affect Tinubu’s prospects in the 2027 elections. It’s worth noting that Rivers State played a pivotal role in providing substantial votes for Tinubu in the past.
The Democracy Watchman also reports that there are calls from the North to remove Wike as FCT Minister. However, Tinubu had previously relied on Wike’s support. Losing control of Rivers could diminish Wike’s significance in Tinubu’s political calculations.
